Matera

The Sassi (Stones) represent the ancient part of the town of Matera.
Developing around the Civita, an entire city was built from digging the calcarenitic rock which is locally known as “tufo”, a housing system that is articulated, clinging to the slopes of a deep valley with unique and surprising natural characteristics: the Gravina. Elegant and operational built-up structures alternate with underground labyrinths and deep mazes, creating a unique landscape of great effect.

Different urban transformation phases are superimposed on the original rugged features of Alta Murgia, the refined dialogue between rock and architecture, canyon and bell tower, have, over the centuries, created an urban backdrop of incomparable quality and beauty.
Once the heart of rural civilisation, it has now been restructured and made more noble, the Sassi live again and leave the visitor breathless, particularly in the evening when the small lights of the homes, workshops and restaurants make it seem like a nativity scene made out of papier mâché.

Back in 1993 it was declared part of the World’s heritage list by Unesco, and superbly offers all those who visit it a unique landscape with a very strong link to the past.
