ALBEROBELLO
The fairytale capital of the TRULLI, declared by Unesco as part of the World’s heritage list thanks to its uniqueness. The origins of its name come from “Sylva Arboris belli”, a woodland area that exists here. The Acquaviva, Counts of Conversano, founded it.
The uniqueness of the place is due to the built-up area of trulli, a construction that in the world is unique, made from local stone, built dry with a cone-shape and covered by “chiancarelle”.
You can visit the Cavaliere Maffei laboratory that is specialised in the reproduction of trulliis in miniature, true works of art, and you can admire how the stone was carefully built using the same techniques of the master trulli makers.
CASTELLANA GROTTE
This is a town of small businesses and industries, on the edge of the Karst valley; a couple of kilometres from the town centre, in fact we can find the famous Grotte di Castellana, one of the largest and most spectacular speleological complexes in Italy, where throughout the year millions of visitors take part in interesting excursions.
The caves represent a fascinating immersion into a unique exhibition of its kind, both for its size (3km in length and more than 70 metres underground) and for its beauty. It is not to be missed…maybe just to take a look at the grotta Bianca too.
